Solitaire (Klondike) โ€” Play Free Online (No Download)

Solitaire โ€” specifically Klondike, the version almost everyone means โ€” is the most-played computer game in history. One deck, seven columns, and the goal of sorting every card into the four foundation piles by suit and rank. Play it free in your browser โ€” no download, no sign-up.

What Is Klondike Solitaire?

Klondike became a household name because it shipped free with Windows from 1990 onward, turning an obscure card patience game into the default way millions of people filled a spare ten minutes. Its origins go back further: patience games of this type were documented in Europe in the late 18th century, and the “Klondike” name is associated with the Canadian gold rush of the 1890s.

What makes it endure is the ratio of certainty to chance. Every deal is solvable in principle, but not every deal is solvable in practice, and the difference is entirely down to the order in which you uncover cards. You are not playing against luck โ€” you are playing against your own sequencing decisions.

How to Play

  1. Layout โ€” seven tableau columns (1 to 7 cards, top card face up), a stock pile, and four empty foundations.
  2. Build the tableau by stacking cards in descending rank and alternating colour (red on black, black on red).
  3. Fill the foundations by suit, starting with the ace and ascending to the king.
  4. Move sequences โ€” an ordered run can be moved as a group if there is a valid destination.
  5. Draw from the stock when no move is available; the number of passes depends on the variant.
  6. You win when all 52 cards sit on the four foundations.

Tips and Strategy

  • Empty a column early. A free column is the most valuable resource in the game โ€” it is where kings go.
  • Do not move a card to a foundation automatically. Sometimes you need that card back in the tableau to receive another card.
  • Uncover face-down cards first. Hidden cards are the only source of new options; foundations do not create options.
  • Play aces and twos immediately โ€” they are almost never needed in the tableau.
  • Think before drawing. Drawing is irreversible in most variants, so take the move that reveals the most information first.

Why Solitaire Still Holds Up

Few games have such a deep skill ceiling hidden behind such a gentle surface. Casual players win roughly one deal in ten; players who plan their sequencing can win far more often. It also costs nothing to run, needs no opponent, and works on any screen โ€” which is why it survived the move from desktop to phone without losing anything.

Works on Every Device

This version runs in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on desktop, tablet, and mobile. Drag cards by mouse or finger, or tap to send a card to its foundation automatically.
