Mahjong Solitaire โ Play Free Online (No Download)
Mahjong Solitaire is the tile-matching puzzle that grew out of the ancient Chinese game: clear a stacked pyramid of tiles by pairing identical ones, but only tiles that are free to move. It is calmer than most match games and far more spatial. Play it free in your browser โ no download, no sign-up.
What Is Mahjong Solitaire?
Despite the name, this is not the four-player tile game played across Asia. Mahjong Solitaire โ often called Mahjong Connect or Turtle โ is a single-player matching puzzle built from the same 144-tile set. Its modern form was popularised by computer versions in the 1980s, most notably the Shanghai solitaire variants that shipped with early PCs, and it has been a browser staple ever since.
The interesting constraint is that tiles are stacked. A tile can only be selected if it is not covered and has a free left or right edge. This means the order in which you remove pairs determines whether the board remains solvable โ remove the wrong pair early and you can strand tiles underneath with no way to reach them.
How to Play
- Find two identical free tiles โ click the first, then the second, to remove both.
- A tile is “free” when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right side is open.
- Match suits exactly for the numbered and honour tiles; seasons and flowers match by group rather than by exact image.
- Clear the whole board to win. If no free pair remains, the deal is dead.
- Use hints and shuffle if the layout offers them โ shuffle only when you are genuinely stuck.
Tips and Strategy
- Work from the top down. Tiles on top block everything beneath them, so clearing upper layers first creates options.
- Never remove a pair that exposes only one tile of another pair if you can avoid it โ you may bury its partner.
- Count before you click. If four identical tiles are visible, remove them so that the remaining ones stay reachable.
- Prioritise the long edges โ tiles at the ends of rows are usually free and act as safe anchors.
- Do not rely on shuffle. It rescues a bad position, but the board is usually winnable if you sequence removal carefully.
Why Mahjong Solitaire Still Holds Up
It offers a rare combination: the relaxing rhythm of a matching game with the genuine spatial planning of a puzzle. Unlike timed match-three games, it lets you think, and the stacked layout means every board is a different problem. It also adapts well to touch screens โ tapping tiles is arguably more pleasant than clicking.
Works on Every Device
This version runs in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on desktop, tablet, and mobile. Click or tap to select tiles; selected tiles are highlighted. The board scales to fit smaller screens.
