Agar.io — Play Free Online (No Download)

Agar.io is the game that turned the “.io” suffix into a genre. You start as a single cell on a petri dish and grow by eating smaller cells while avoiding larger ones. There are no menus, no tutorial, and no accounts — just a mouse and sixty seconds to learn. Play it free in your browser — no download, no sign-up.

What Is Agar.io?

Agar.io was created in April 2015 by Brazilian developer Matheus Valadares as a browser experiment. It spread almost entirely through streaming and word of mouth, becoming one of the fastest-growing web games of the decade. The name refers to agar, the gel used in petri dishes to culture microorganisms — which is exactly what the arena resembles.

The design is a perfect mass-based food chain. Size determines everything: you eat anything smaller, you are eaten by anything larger, and mass slowly drains as you grow, so standing still is not an option. That single relationship produces cooperation, betrayal, ambushes, and chases without any of it being programmed as a rule.

How to Play

  1. Move your cell toward the cursor; the cell follows the pointer continuously.
  2. Eat the small pellets scattered around the map to gain mass slowly and safely.
  3. Eat smaller players for large gains — but only if you are at least about 10% larger.
  4. Split with the spacebar to launch half your mass forward and swallow a smaller target.
  5. Eject mass with W to feed teammates or to bait a pursuing player.
  6. Avoid viruses — the green spiky cells pop large players into many small ones, and hide inside them when you are small.

Tips and Strategy

  • Small and fast beats big and slow. Mass reduces speed, so do not grow too early — collect pellets first.
  • Use viruses as shields. When you are small enough to hide inside a virus, larger players cannot reach you there.
  • Bait with ejected mass. Ejecting a pellet draws greedy opponents toward you and away from safety.
  • Split only with a clear target. Splitting halves your mass and leaves you vulnerable for several seconds.
  • Watch the leaderboard corners. They show who is dangerous on the current server before you run into them.

Why Agar.io Still Holds Up

Agar.io proved that a browser tab could host genuine multiplayer competition with no install step. It launched the entire .io wave — Slither.io, Diep.io, Surviv.io, and dozens more — and established the template: instant join, anonymous play, one mechanic, short rounds. More than a decade later the loop has not aged, because “eat or be eaten” needs no explanation in any language.

Works on Every Device

This version runs in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on desktop, tablet, and mobile. Mouse control is fastest on desktop; touch control works on phones, though precise movement is easier on a larger screen.
