Entanglement — Play Free Online (No Download)
Entanglement is a hexagonal path-building puzzle: place one tile per turn, extend your line as far as possible, and watch a single careless placement end a promising run. It is simple enough to learn in ten seconds and deep enough to chase a high score for hours. Play it free in your browser — no download, no sign-up, no plugins.
What Is Entanglement?
Entanglement was created by Michael Gilleland and released in 2010, quickly becoming one of the most-shared browser puzzle games of its era. The board is a hexagon of hex-tiles; each tile carries six path segments connecting its edges in different patterns. You extend a single continuous path by placing tiles drawn from a shuffled stack, and every hexagon you cross adds to your score.
The genius is the scoring curve. Points do not grow linearly with the length of your move — they grow quadratically. Crossing six hexes in one move is worth far more than three separate moves of two hexes. That single rule turns a placid tile-laying game into a genuine risk-reward puzzle: the safe short move is almost always the wrong move.
How to Play Entanglement
- Your path starts at the centre of the board, extending from one edge of the starting tile.
- Place the tile you are given into any empty cell adjacent to the path’s current end, rotating it so the path continues.
- Your path automatically travels across the tile following its printed segments — the longer the route, the more points.
- Rotate before placing to choose which exit the path leaves from; this is where most decisions are made.
- The game ends when your path runs into the board edge or into a previously occupied cell.
Tips and Strategy
- Always plan the exit, not the entry. Every tile has multiple rotations; the one that matters is where the path leaves.
- Build toward the centre, not the rim. Staying inward keeps options open; drifting outward strands your path against an edge.
- Leave the long straight tiles for a big run. Tiles with long segments are what make 10+ hex moves possible — do not waste them on short connections.
- Watch the stack. Keeping track of what you have already drawn tells you which tiles are still likely to appear.
- Accept small moves when the board gets crowded. Late game, survival per turn matters more than a spectacular run.
Why Entanglement Still Holds Up
Entanglement is a textbook example of elegant design: one mechanic, one scoring twist, no timers, no microtransactions. Its influence can be seen in the wave of minimalist browser puzzles that followed, and in how often it appears in lists of games people return to years later. It also loads instantly and runs on anything — a rare combination in modern gaming.
Works on Every Device
This version runs in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on desktop, tablet, and mobile. The board scales to the screen and the drag-and-rotate controls work with both mouse and touch input. No Flash, no downloads.

FAQ
Is Entanglement free to play?
Yes — free in your browser, with no registration and no downloads.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs on standard web technologies and loads directly in the page.
Can I play it on my phone?
Yes. Touch controls support dragging and rotating tiles.
How is the score calculated?
Points increase with the square of the length of each move, so long uninterrupted runs are worth far more than many short ones.
