About This Classic

Q*bert (Gottlieb, 1982, Warren Davis) features an orange, trumpet-nosed creature hopping around a pyramid of cubes, changing each cube’s color. Simple goal, diabolically clever execution.

Enemies chase you — Coily the snake, Ugg and Wrongway, Slick and Sam — while you can only move diagonally. Falling off the pyramid triggers Q*bert’s garbled “@!#?@!” speech bubble — one of gaming’s first uses of procedural character voice, simulating profanity with punctuation because voice synthesis was too expensive.

Pure genius marketing.

Pyramid Mastery

  • Diagonal Only: Mentally rotate the screen 45 degrees to plan routes.
  • Coily’s Pattern: Coily bounces predictably from the top. Lead him onto escape discs or off the edge.
  • Flying Discs: Limited per-level escape. Jump on one to fly to the pyramid top and reset your position.
  • Slick & Sam: Green gremlins undo your cube progress. Eliminate them first.

Enduring Charm

Cartoon, board game, movie cameos (Wreck-It Ralph, Pixels) — Q*bert is everywhere. The isometric perspective was revolutionary for 1982, later used in SimCity 2000 and Diablo. Technical innovation + character design = timeless.
