About This Classic
Before Super Mario Bros., there was Mario Bros. (Nintendo, 1983, Shigeru Miyamoto & Gunpei Yokoi). Introduced Luigi and the plumbing theme. Two players, one screen, flippingShellcreepers and Sidesteppers by hitting the platform beneath them.
Enemies turn into eggs when defeated — collect them before they hatch. The POW block (limited uses) flips all enemies on screen. Friendly bumping sends your partner into enemies — competitive co-op at its finest.
The sewers of New York have never been this much fun.
Co-Op Strategy & Dirty Tricks
- Flip First, Kick Fast: Platform hit = flip. Then RUN into them to kick off. Hesitation = death.
- POW Block: Limited per level. Save for emergency swarm clear.
- Fireball Hazards: Green (predictable) and red (homes in slightly). Don’t get cornered.
- Split Screen: One player left, one right. Communicate about POW usage.
- Friendly Bump: Sending your partner into enemies is either an accident or a strategy. You decide.
Mario’s Arcade Origins
Established green pipes, plumbing theme, and co-op/competitive duality. Included as a bonus in Super Mario Bros. 3 and remade for GBA. Tight, fast-paced co-op that’s just as fun today as in 1983.
