About This Classic
Released by Namco in 1982, Dig Dug stars Taizo Hori, a character in a white suit who tunnels through dirt to eliminate monsters — by inflating them with a bicycle pump until they pop, or dropping rocks on their heads. It is wonderfully absurd.
Pookas (round red creatures with goggles) and Fygars (green fire-breathing dragons) chase you through colorful strata. The tension: inflate enemies one at a time, or lure them under falling rocks for massive point combos.
A commercial smash ported to every 80s platform, Dig Dug’s catchy tune and satisfying balloon-pop sound are pure arcade nostalgia.
Advanced Tactics
- Pump Positioning: Get above enemies — the pump reaches slightly downward. Each enemy needs multiple presses to pop.
- Rock Drops: Tunnel under a rock to drop it. Lure enemies underneath for massive combo points. Two rocks on one enemy stack multipliers.
- Vertical vs Horizontal: Fygars only breathe fire horizontally. Dig vertical shafts to approach them safely.
- Corner Traps: Dig pocket traps around corners. Enemies follow you in for easy inflation.
Gaming History
Unlike Pac-Man where you run away, Dig Dug gives you an active weapon — presented so cartoonishly nobody noticed the violence. Sequels, Namco compilations, and Taizo as a crossover character followed. Dig Dug proves genuinely weird game design pays off.
